You must be wondering what a country like Iraq has to do with Beer. Is it any American policy to gain popularity in Iraq? – No, it’s not. Actually Iraq is the place where beer originated. Confused? Let me clear the air by telling you about the history of beer. It is recorded in history that beer originated by early Sumerians in the ancient land of Mesopotamia and Egypt, this place is exactly where modern Iraq lies. Sumerians, who where world’s first builders and farmers were also world’s first brewers and are believed to have migrated into Middle East from India. Manuscripts from that period suggest that beer was used as an offering to their goddess “Ninkasi”. After the Mesopotamian Empire was taken over by the Babylonian empire; Hammurabi, the sixth Babylonian king encouraged the fashion brewing beers but made rules for consumption of beer which was biased towards the males of the society. With the advent of Europeans in 3000BC, beer gained popularity among the German and Celtic tribes. This is how the western world owes to Iraq a great deal. If it hadn’t been this country then today bars would had been half empty. Thank you Iraq, for giving the world this wonderful gift.
